]]>We get asked a lot about what other kids bikes parents should consider when looking at the Commencal Ramones. The answer is always “it depends”. It depends on many factors like type of riding, budget and overall performance. Here are three alternatives we recommend to parents who are considering the Commencal Ramones.
The Commencal Ramones 24"
Frog Kids Bikes: The Lighter Alternative to Commnencal Ramones
Frog bikes kids bike line-up will be the lighter alternative to Commencal. Frog’s smaller pedal bikes like the Frog 53 (20”) and the Frog 44 (16”) will be easier to pedal uphill and easier to handle for a newer rider. They are more hybrid and sidewalk oriented, but can get into the dirt as well. Your young one who is building confidence will find the Frog easier to pedal. On the larger size. Frog also has the Frog 62 (24”), Frog 69” (26”) and Frog 72 (26”), which are all front suspension hardtails that have more aggressive design with disc brakes and ready for any trail. Frog's smaller bikes also come in many different colors, which is very important to young riders.
Diamondback Kids Bikes: Excellent Bang for the Buck Alternative to Commancal Ramones
Diamondback kids bikes offer a great alternative at a strong price point without compromising performance. As an example the Diamondback Line 24 MTB kids bike compares well to the Commencal Ramones 24 and should be part of the consideration set. With a SR Suntour fork that performs like the big people’s bikes, giving your ripper-to-be 80mm of front suspension travel. The 24-inch wheels are stiff and stable, shod with aggressive 2.25-inch wide tires: perfect for tearing up the woods. Disc brakes and a wide-range SRAM 1×8 drivetrain are real performance features, underscoring that the Line 24 is a legit mountain bike.
Diamondback Line
Mondraker Kids Bikes: No Compromises Alternative to Commencal Ramones
Mondraker’s Forward geometry places the rider in a more centered position, providing increased stability and control on steep terrain. The Mondraker Factor 24 full-suspension bike is made with the highest quality components such as the X Fusion 100mm air suspension fork, SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain and SRAM hydraulic disc brakes. Mondraker also makes the Grommy 16 Electric Balance bike, the Mondraker Leader 20” 7-speed 20” bike and the Mondraker Factor 26 Kids Bike.
Diamondback City and Urban Commuters:
These bikes are designed with practicality and convenience in mind. They often come with fenders, racks, and lights for enhanced utility.
Mountain Bikes:
Diamondback Hardtail Mountain Bikes:

]]>Woom Bikes USA, in coordination with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, has issued a recall on July 6, 2023 for approximately 84,000 children's bicycles. The recall comes in response to 77 reported incidents of the handlebar and stem detaching or loosening, leading to 19 injuries. The affected kids bicycles, known as the Woom Original models, were sold between 2018 and 2021 and cater to children aged 18 months to 14 years.
What Parents Need to Know:
1) Parents are advised to cease using the recalled kids bicycles and promptly contact Woom Bikes USA to obtain a free repair kit. The company is proactively reaching out to all known purchasers to provide necessary assistance.
2) The recalled bicycles were sold in the United States and were available for purchase on woom.com, Amazon, and local bicycle stores nationwide from September 2018 to March 2022. Additionally, 533 bikes were sold in Canada.
3) The recall encompasses six models of the Woom bicycle lineup: Woom 1 and Woom 1 Plus (balance bikes) and Woom 2, Woom 3, Woom 4, Woom 5, and Woom 6 (pedal bikes).
4) This recall is primarily motivated by safety concerns regarding the handlebar and stem assembly, which have been reported to detach or loosen during use. Such issues pose a significant risk to kids, potentially resulting in accidents and injuries. With 19 reported injuries already, it is crucial to address the problem promptly and comprehensively.
5) Parents and guardians are advised to immediately discontinue the use of the affected kid bicycles until the necessary repairs are made. This precautionary measure will help mitigate the risk of accidents and injuries associated with the handlebar and stem detachment.
For customers who purchased the Woom Original models within the specified timeframe, the company is offering a solution through the provision of free repair kits.
Ready, Set, Pedal does not carry any Woom bicycles. All kids bikes sold by Ready, Set, Pedal are covered my manufacturer warranty as well as a Ready, Set, Pedal guarantee.
Ready, Set, Pedal has a full inventory of kids bikes from ages 1 year to adult.
]]>Dress appropriately: Choose bike-friendly clothing, avoiding loose pants that can get caught in the chain. Opt for breathable materials and, if it tends to rain, carry a lightweight rain jacket and an extra shirt for sweatier rides.
Freshen up: If you're biking to work without access to a shower, bring sport wipes or use paper towels for a quick freshen-up before starting your day.
Fenders for rainy climates: If you live in a rainy area like the Pacific Northwest, consider adding fenders to your bike to prevent mud splatters. Look for options that attach to your fork, steerer tube, or seatpost.
Plan your route: Explore different routes using Google Maps' bike route feature or seek advice from local cycling clubs. Experiment with less-traveled roads for a more enjoyable experience.
Ensure visibility: As daylight increases, it's still essential to have lights and reflective gear. Use front and rear blinking lights on your bike, assume drivers can't see you, and ride defensively.
Carry basic tools: Be prepared for mechanical issues by carrying a spare tube, pump or CO2 canister, tire levers, and a multi-tool. Familiarize yourself with using these tools.
Consider clipless pedals: If you're covering longer distances, consider switching to clipless pedals for improved power transfer and efficiency. They may take some getting used to but offer benefits.
Waterproof backpack: Invest in a waterproof backpack or panniers for commuting. Brands like Camelback are a great choice.
Get creative with cargo: Use milk crates or buckets as inexpensive panniers for additional storage. Drill holes in buckets to allow rainwater to drain out.
Enjoy the workout: Embrace the exercise benefits of cycling. It's a fun way to stay fit and lose weight. Commuting by bike can replace the need for a gym membership.

We're really excited about what Mondraker is offering across it's entire kids and adult line-up for 2023. More inventory is coming available across the US in the next few months and we are offering the full line-up. The Mondraker Leader 20 inch is one of our favorite kids sidewalk and light trail bikes. The quality and workmanship really comes out when you see these bikes in person. At sub 20lb weight, it's one of the lightest kid bikes in the 20 inch category.
Next up, is the Mondraker F-Play 24" Full suspension electric bike. This is the Ferrari of kids electric bikes. Designed to assist your little shredder on the ups so they can slay the downs. It comes with all the features and components you'd see on an adult Mondraker. We have a huge backlog of pre-orders on these right now and will be fulfilling them before school is out. Order yours today.
Marin Youth Bikes 24" Rift. Marin brought their Rift lineup to the event. It's a great looking bike line we've admired. The Rift Zone 24" has a full suspension system that includes a RockShox Monarch R shock in the rear and a RockShox Recon RL fork in the front.
At every booth we came across a new gravel bike emerged. Diamondback has really stepped up their gravel game and we couldn't get enough of the custom paint scheme on the new Haanjo below. If you rode in the 90's you probably have fond memories of DBs. Diamondback is truly back, now under new ownership and management and we're really excited to be a part their journey going forward. We're now carrying their full kids and adult Diamondback lineup.
KTM bikes has entered the US market and we love this killer black and orange KTM X-Strada Gravel bike with orange tires. It's almost a shame they'd get dirty.
Stay-tuned. More news from the Sea Otter exhibition to come from day 2 and 3.

The 24-inch wheels and low-slung geometry provide just the right fit and handling for the smaller rider, and the 6061 aluminum alloy construction can take plenty of abuse. E-bikes can be gamechangers for kids who ride in areas where climbing uphill is a must. They can enable your child to ride at the same pace as an adult would uphill without the towing, pushing, or grumbling you may hear if your child is riding an acoustic (non-electric) bike. The goal should always be to help instill a lifetime love of riding and typically subjecting a young one to long or steep arduous climbs is not the way to do that. Kids ebikes help them overcome some of these obstacles and get them out there having more fun for longer periods.

]]>Did you know that that Ready, Set, Pedal is the largest US retailer of Frog Bikes? Here's why we sell so many.
Frog Bikes is a leading manufacturer of award-winning lightweight kids’ bikes. Built with bespoke componentry and a full range of size, Frog accommodate the specific needs & anatomies of any kid. The ergonomic range comprises balance, first pedal, hybrid, road, MTB & track bikes, for all ages, abilities, and disciplines.
We love Frog bikes because they are lightweight and easy learn on and there is actual research behind their designs. Brunel University’s Centre for Human Performance, Exercise and Rehabilitation has tested some 250 children of all sizes from age 2 to 16 on a uniquely designed and purpose built bike fitting rig. The objective of the independent study was to identify the ideal position for kids to give them ultimate comfort as well as an efficient position on the bike. This pioneering study showed results which were at times unexpected. Frog has taken these results and embedded it into some unique design features on their bikes. In other words, the geometry of Frog’s bike frames pay specific attention to children’s unique body dimensions, which include the following:
A more comfortable reach. In response to the findings of this study, Frog has reduced the length of their top tubes to ensure that every child will be able to achieve a comfortable reach in accordance with the results of this study. As before, longer stems are available, allowing each bike to grow with the child.
Changeable handlebars. Somewhat surprisingly, the study found that there was no correlation in children between the most comfortable hand position and shoulder width. The most comfortable position varied widely amongst the group studied. To accommodate the individual nature of the most comfortable handlebar width, we recommend that, if needed, Frog riders ask their local Frog dealer to swap the handlebar to accommodate their preference. Frog’s brakes and gears can easily be repositioned on the handlebars for the small minority of children who would benefit from a narrower hand position.
Optimized crank length. It’s important that kids can put power into their pedals throughout the life of their bike, from when they first start riding it to when they have nearly grown out of it. Frog bikes has slightly shorter cranks thus giving kids a more efficient and comfortable riding position. Another consideration is that children’s legs grow at a faster rate than the rest of their body. To accommodate this, Frog Bikes uses the same type of crank across their entire hybrid range, and has large cranks available from their stockists to swap as a child grows
Narrow “Q” Factor. As children have shorter legs than adults, the distance between the two pedals needs to be narrower. If the distance between the two pedals (“Q-factor”) is too wide, the riding action will become less efficient, which is likely due to a large proportion of the pedal forces being directed outward rather than in the direction of the movement. To accommodate this, Frog bikes are equipped with patented, straightshaped cranks, whose Q-factor is up to 20mm narrower compared to traditional cranks
]]>Safety first, all other things second
The primary function of a bicycle helmet is to protect against serious head injuries. The extent to which any helmet can offer adequate protection should the primary buying consideration. This is closely followed by fit (because a good helmet that doesn’t fit well cannot perform as designed). Style, color, shape, retention mechanism and supplementary features are important, but they should only factor in the buying decision as secondary considerations after safety and fit.
How do we know a helmet offers good protection?
The quickest way to ensure that you’re buying a helmet that will offer the necessary protection for your child’s head is to check the safety rating. In the United States, this rating standard is called Snell B90/B95, in Europe products that meet the required protection criteria have a “CE label”. Manufacturers that offer helmets that meet these standards often list this information on their product pages, or sometimes you may find lists of approved products on the standard issuer’s organization.
(If you’re unsure, please do get in touch with us and we will gladly provide this information)
Kid’s helmet categories
When shopping for kids helmets, you will often see them categorized by age brackets (as we do on our website) or you will see categories like “infant”, “toddler” and “junior” helmets.
While these categories are useful shortcuts to where you should be looking for your new kids bicycle helmet, you must ensure that you get the right size. See our article on sizing and fitting kids helmet to learn more.
Kids helmet styles
Kids helmet come in various styles. There are helmets that are inspired by skateboard helmet styling with a more rounded shape (see the Bell Lil Ripper). Others draw on styling of modern adult mountain bike helmets with a very useful integrated visor (see the Giro Fixture and Lazer Impala). There are also helmets that have a classic road helmet shape (like the Lazer Blade) as well as those that have a more neutral styling with a wide selection of color options (see the Giro Hale). The choice of style will depend on a combination of your kid’s age, the kind of cycling they do (on the road or have they started venturing on trails?) and personal style preferences.
Other considerations
Helmet construction, materials and technologies have come a long way. Some features enhance not only the fit and comfort, but also the augment the level of protection that the helmet offers. One such technologies is MIPS, which stands for Multi-Directional Impact Protection. Simply explained, the MIPS system itself is a layer of low friction material that sits between the shell foam and the helmet liner (the part that sits on the head). This layer allows for a degree of sliding motion in 360 degrees, which has been proven to reduce the transfer of rotational impact force to the brain (which often is the primary cause of concussions). We carry a large collection of MIPS helmets in stock.
Helmet closure and retention mechanisms come in various combinations of dials, ratchets, buckles and straps. Some manufacturers offer innovative closure mechanisms specifically developed for kids helmets, like Lazer’s AutoFit system, which uses a spring system in place of adjustment dials to automatically adjust the helmet to proper size on your child’s head, which makes for less frustration when getting ready to go for a ride!
]]>The Center for Disease Control reports that over 60% of bicycle related injuries that require emergency care are among children aged 5 and older. This statistic along should be adequate encouragement for any parent to take bicycle safety seriously.
Furthermore, research evidence confirms that bicycle helmets do work effectively when it comes to protection against head injuries. Studies have confirmed that helmets significantly reduce the severity of head injuries as well as upper facial areas, and provide equal measures of protection in cases of crashes and collisions.
How to determine the correct kids helmet size
Even if you ensure that you buy a good helmet with the right safety ratings), an ill-fitting helmet will be unlikely to do its job (i.e. provide adequate head protection).
A well-fitting bicycle helmet should fit snugly around the circumference of your kid's head. It should also be secured in a stable position so that it is not easily moved on impact, exposing the head to potential trauma. Use the Ready, Set, Pedal Kids Helmet Size Chart to ensure the best fit.
It’s fairly simple to ensure that you get the right helmet for your child’s head. There are two steps involved:
Step 1: Your first step will be measuring your kid’s head. You want to take the measurement using flexible measuring tape, going around the circumference of the head just above the ears and about an inch (or approximately two-finger’s width) above the eye brows.
Step 2: Next, you need to use the measurement from step 1 to consult the helmet manufacturer’s sizing chart. Here, there are a few caveats to keep in mind:
In summary: there is no substitute to an accurate head measurement and careful consultation of the sizing charts.
Some parents are tempted to size up their child’s helmet on the assumption that they would “grow into it”. While this may be financially sound approach, it is not conducive to a helmet that will fit as it should now, which is more important from a safety standpoint.
How a kid’s helmet should fit
The helmet should sit level above your child’s head. It should not tip forward or rearward. Remember the two-finger’s widths above the eyebrows we used as a measurement guide? This is where the front of the helmet should sit.
Once you have positioned the helmet correctly, it’s time to snug things up. This is done using the helmet’s retention mechanism (most commonly a ratchet dial at the back of the helmet) and a chin strap. You might want to trim off the excess material in the chin strap, or at least tuck it out of the way so that it does not irritate your kid’s skin.
Be prepared to deal with protests from the little one if they’re not used to wearing a helmet. The rigid structure of a bicycle helmet takes a little getting used to. Be patient!
What to look for in a kid’s helmet
In the US, the helmet safety standard is Snell B90/B95. You will want to limit your search to helmets that have this rating.
When learning to ride, a child must be allowed to experience the feel of leaning sideways and how steering affects the balance of the bike. When a child learns to ride without leaning, such as on a tricycle or bike with training wheels, they aren't really learning to ride at all! By starting out on a balance bike, your child will develop balance, coordination, and confidence!
A balance bike is simply the best way for a child to learn balance and learn to ride a bike! From toddlers and young children to teenagers and adults just learning to ride, and those with special needs, there is a Strider balance bike to get them on two wheels.
Strider Balance Bikes
Strider Balance Bikes are the result of 10 years of development, manufacturing improvements, riding, observation, testing, and even racing. The patented design of the Strider is lightweight (6.7 lbs) and allows for a very low minimum seat height. This balance bike was designed for 2 year old children to learn to ride. Many parents even experience their children riding as young as 18 months, or younger! Strider also offers 16" and 20" balance bike models for older kids, adults just learning to ride, as well as those with special needs.
Early Rider Balance Bikes
Early Rider was founded in a garden shed in the market town of Henley 30 miles west of London. Their first bike was a wooden balance bike, shaped like a chopper. It just worked - stability, ride comfort, roll over and all attitude. Super lightweight, no maintenance, no grease, no dirt, no steel to rust, smooth, quiet and always ready to ride.
Early Rider makes the Lite, which takes full advantage of wood to make a lightweight bike that is easy to maneuver. Early Rider’s SuperPly construction embraces wood’s natural forgiveness to absorb vibrations and smooth bumps to provide the most comfortable, confidence inspiring ride.
]]>The coaster brake is considered a safety feature and in some cases is the law. We recommend starting a first time pedaler on a bike with a freewheel if possible. Most kids first starting to pedal accidentally pedal backwards sometimes. If the bike has a coaster brake, pedaling backwards slams on the brakes and can startle the young rider. We have seen even the most confident balance bike rider start to get nervous when trying to learn to pedal using a coaster brake. Not to mention a coaster brake hub adds more weight to the kids bike.
With a freewheel, there are no negative consequences for accidentally pedaling backwards as you learn. Only positive results as the bike propels forward as the child pedals in the correct direction. Additionally, the hand brakes on kid's bicycles these days are made to fit tiny hands and be operated easily by a small kid's hands. They have come a long way over the years.
Regardless of whether you have a coaster (foot) brake, we recommend finding a bike with hand brakes so kids will get used to them and for the extra braking power. Many places in extreme hilly areas do not even allow bikes without hand brakes to ride on the mountain because they don't have the necessary braking power to sufficiently slow the bike without them.
Keep in mind, if the bike only has hand brakes only, ensure your child can reach the brake and squeeze it easily while holding the handlebars. Also ensure your child is very comfortable using the hand brakes before riding any hilly terrain.

]]>Step 1 ) The inseam measurement is the most critical measurement to fitting a child for a bike. Please take the time to measure the rider’s inside leg. It’s easy to measure:
Step 2) Check the seat height and stand over Height of the manufacturer. Ready, Set, Pedal provides the manufacturers' kid bike sizing charts when available on all our product pages.
Step 3) Use The Official Ready, Set, Pedal Sizing Chart as a guide to help narrow your search.
What if your child falls between sizes? Our general recommendation is to move up if your child has good riding ability. They will likely get used to it and grow into the bike in fairly short order. If they are not yet confident in riding it’s best to size down.
Finally, size is not the only thing that matters. Remember your little one must be able to pedal the bike. Ready, Set, Pedal specializes in offering lighter weight kids bikes. If you are shopping on another site and the weight is not listed it is best to move-on.
